2023 Contest Make-up

From Kate Rav:

Hi All,

Apologies in advance for the length of this email, but hopefully it will provide the information you need to get your make-up and supplies pulled together. (Also, everyone will receive a new pair of earrings to wear for contest).

Below is the list of make-up you will need for regional contest this year, along with some basic make-up tips that Gabrielle was kind enough to put together. This list was put together for our last in-person contest that never took place, so some of you may have it already. Some items are no longer available, so a substitute/alternative is listed, You do not have to purchase the substitute, if you already have the original color on the list.

strongly recommend that you order your make-up soon. Some items may take a couple weeks to arrive.  Some of the e.l.f. make-up can be bought from their website or all of it is available from Amazon.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks!

Kate Rav.

CONTEST Make-up

Makeup you will need (some of which overlaps with NOTS):

  • e.l.f. Flawless Finish Foundation in Honey $6    If you cannot find the foundation in the Honey tone, please order the Maple tone.
  • e.l.f. Aqua Beauty Blush and Bronzer in Bronzed Pink Beige (No longer available-use it if you have it already)
  • Alternative blush: e.l.f. Powder Blush Palette: Four blush shades: Light $8
  • e.l.f. Bite-Size Eyeshadows in Rose Water $3
  • e.l.f. Lipstick Matte lip color pencil in Wine $4
  • e.l.f O Face Satin Lipstick No Regrets** $9

**If you have the Mabeline True Red that we've worn in the past, that is a very close match to the recommended e.l.f No Regrets and can be used if you like.

  • Optional: Eyeshadow primer - Examples: Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion and Too Faced Shadow Insurance.
  • Strongly recommended if you can tolerate it: False eyelashes if you don’t wear glasses on stage
  • Otherwise Black mascara if you do wear glasses on stage.  Consider an eyelash primer to add volume, and to help your mascara stick.  Also consider a fiber mascara to extend your lashes.
  • Black eyeliner

Communal Makeup YOU DO NOT NEED TO BUY-They will be available in the hospitality suite and can be safely shared.

  • Setting spray
  • e.l.f. Shimmer Jelly in Dew

A few notes about the products:

  • The foundation is a richer color than we have worn in the past and may appear too dark when first applied. However, if applied correctly and blended properly it will look quite good on stage. Note, you must use a wet make-up sponge to apply the foundation.
  • You have a couple options inthe blush packet. Please use either of the two darker colors based on your skin tone and blend, blend, blend with your brushes

Tools you will need:

  • Foam makeup pads or foundation brush
  • Foundation or contouring brush
  • Blush brush
  • Shadow brush
  • Crease/eyeshadow blending brush

General makeup tips:

  • Use brushes to apply and blend.  Decent, inexpensive sets can be found from e.l.f. Cosmetics, Marshalls/TJ Maxx, CVS, Ulta.com, and Amazon.com. The shorter and stiffer the brush, the heavier the coverage but more difficult blending will be. Check out https://www.thefashionspot.com/beauty/492605-beginners-guide-makeup-brushes/#/slide/1
  • After loading your brush, lightly tap the handle to dislodge loose particles.
  • Apply lighter colors first, and then progressively darker colors to minimize brush contamination.
  • If you don’t feel like a clown or “painted woman,” you may not have enough makeup on.  Stage makeup is intense! You will look washed-out under the lights if you don’t have enough on.
  • Practice, practice, practice, especially if you do not usually use makeup or are not used to brushes.
  • Brushes may be cleaned with Johnson’s Baby Shampoo (travel size is cheaper alternative in lieu of branded brush cleaner), and dried at an angle with brush fibers pointed downward.  Gabriele props the handles up on a partially rolled hand towel.

From Diane Kelley: An interesting video on how to correctly apply eye makeup to older eyes
I found this video very helpful and “eye opening”. It’s about 20 minutes long.  Of course, she calls 50-something eyes “older".       https://youtu.be/IHfA15Emme4
